Napster Case Solution Essay Example

Napster Case Solution Essay Objective: Viability of Napster as a revenue generating company. Case in brief: Napster is a brainchild of Shawn fanning, launched on June 1 ,1999 as a peer-to-peer music downloading program for college students. Napster became a one of the most popular sites on the internet, claiming some 15 million users in little more than a year. From the beginning, Napster facing so many problems from the RIAA and music industry players. Napster violated the copyrights by allowing users to swap the music recordings for free. However, on March 5, 2001 Napster was ordered by the U. S. court to stop trading copyrighted material. The following Year Napster filed for bankruptcy and was bought out by Roxio Inc. Key success factors: The main point in the case is the Principle of copyright protection will enable the Napster to transform itself from a freeloader’s paradise to a revenue generating business in the face of competition. Before considering the viability of Napster as a revenue generating company, analysis of key drivers of success is required. Napster is the first success story of distributed computing which is using unused capacity of the millions of computers on the Internet be an efficient source of processing power. Napster, with its central servers, is not the purest form of distributed computing, but is an important step in that direction. The development of MP3 format and portable MP3 players has played a major role in success of Napster. Situation Analysis: If the Napster providing a service of copyrighted materials, it has to charge for these services. In this case, copyrighted music is tightly held by the recording industry and the cost to acquire those assets are extremely high. Given that copyrighted music is tightly held and the limited nature of Napster’s financial resources, Napster can only hope to acquire these assets through alliances. Strategic alternatives: Despite the reluctance to pay for online content, have to create a awareness that content cannot remain free forever, driven by awareness of financial problems that Internet companies are having as well as by recognizing that content creators must receive compensation for their work. The key to any subscription-based model is to understand the features that the consumer values (demand), and to offer those features with level of exclusivity (scarcity). To succeed in the dynamic music market, Napster must offer a tiered set of subscriptions with different levels of payment and commitment. Service options could be in a following packages. * Pay per download: Small cost to downloading a particular song. Offers all kinds of control and flexibility to user. Would require registration with site. Micropayments might be useful here. * Unlimited access to specific Napster defined libraries: This could mean access to the popular content or even artist based access. Unlimited access to all content based on limited time commitment: * Unlimited commitment: this could means commitment for a minimum of 1 year. The sustainability of a subscription-based service is possible only if Napster can align itself with all the major record labels to have their content available on their site. The other key variable is the need to develop a more secure format against the piracy. This can be achieved only with a concerted effort among the record labels, dist ribution outlets such as Napster and software. Creating an appealing pay service will be a steep hurdle, particularly with the fact that the users have got accustomed to the free service and the presence of competitors who can provide the same service free. In addition, the sentiment that they have been charged excessively by the music industry is prevalent among the consumers and needs effort from all sides to correct this problem. Napster has sown the seeds of a digital revolution where the consumers have become tired of the traditional distribution model and have started expecting more. But it’s hard to deny the compelling advantages provided by these new technologies. As technology advances across the board and online digital delivery slowly replaces CD sales, these issues will become more and more pressing for the major labels. Napster needs to make recording companies realize a vision of a digital future. Recognizing and planning for future market needs now will allow these major labels or anyone else who responds well to these market needs to survive as the future of the music industry.

The day went on and they had dinner. The next day Mike’s wife started to nag she kept saying how come you’re not as rich as bill and you’re better than him, he couldn’t take it. That day he wanted to eat Chinese he went to his favorite Chinese restaurant ‘Chin Dragon’. When they got home Mike couldn’t stop thinking about the fortune cookies. He kept wondering was this just a coincidence that he got this in a fortune cookie, even Jenny his wife got the same thing. Can this be true can his life ambition come true? No he thought it has to be a coincidence. That night he couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking if this was true what was going to bring him this fame and fortune? All he’s working on at this moment is a simple hacking program for him self because of free time. His wife wakes up. She asks him why isn’t he asleep. He tells her what he’s thinking about and she says, â€Å"I don’t think your going to get fame and fortune just like that†Ã'Ž â€Å"What do you mean? † he replied â€Å"Well, that hacking program you’re working on for fun† she says. â€Å"Yes what about it? † he replies anxiously. â€Å"Is it power full? She asks. â€Å"Yeah its pretty good† he replies but doesn’t have a clue what’s all this got to do with his fortune. â€Å"Why don’t you access Bills files and find out what he’s planning? † she says quietly. â€Å"You want me to betray my best friend. No forget about it† he replied angrily and went to bed. The next day he gets up and goes on his computer to do a bit of work. He kept working on his hacking program until it was finished. â€Å"Honey† he called. â€Å"I’ve finished my program. † Jenny walks in and congratulates him â€Å"Well no you need to test it! † she said. â€Å"Test it? † he replied. â€Å"Who on? † â€Å"I can’t try it on anyone its illegal† â€Å"Well test it on Bills I am sure he wont mind, you are his best friend† she tells him â€Å"Just see if it works properly and the switch it off† â€Å"Well ok† he replies and starts to test it he started to input and few numbers and letters and the put search. Bills name came up on the screen. He accessed his computer. â€Å"Look what’s that? † asked Jenny â€Å"Oh it will be some of his files† â€Å"I’ll close it now I know it works† he saidÃ'Ž â€Å"No† Jenny said, â€Å"just have a quick look, it won’t hurt† He sat there looking at Bill Gates files. His ambition took control of him. He spotted a file named ‘big plan’. He began looking through it. It was a massive program what was going to change the world. He froze. All his life he wanted fame and now he could get it but at his best friends cost. Jenny kept telling him to copy the file then alter it for him so he goes wrong. She called him a coward. He didn’t know what to do. His wife kept nagging him. He finally surrendered to his ambition and downloaded the file to his computer and started to alter Bills file completely. Jenny kept saying how wonderful he was and encouraged him to carry on. He was finished. He worked day and night on this program until one day he had finished it. Bill rang him up that day and said that his whole life just went wrong. The program contract with the Japs he made has fallen because his program didn’t work. Now he has to pay Billions of pounds in compensation and at the moment cant pay that amount so he had to sell half his company. At that moment guilt started to grow in Mikes heart. His best friends life has collapsed but his road is open. He felt very sorry for him and said he was busy. In the following week Mike made a contract with the British. He sold them Bill’s program for a 30 billion contract he got 50% of the shares. His name was known all across the globe and his program sold very fast. But now he was feeling very guilty he’s now the famous rich and famous one while his friend was under debt. In those weeks Bill didn’t even find out about Mike he was to busy sorting out his problem. He went and says the program a computer competition. He was absolutely stunned when it had looked just like the one he made. He gets a bit suspicious and goes to Mike’s home straight away. When he got there he didn’t even say hello to Mike the first thing he said was â€Å"that program of yours when did you start making it? † Mike hesitated a bit knowing Bills suspicion he replies â€Å"oh I’ve been on this special project for a long time, Its been a secret† Bill talked to him about it and went back home. Mike was feeling awful he probably just lost his best friend. His guilt grew more and more over the days past. He didn’t hear from Bill for a while now and was really scared. What he didn’t know was at this time Bill was trying to see if anyone had hacked is computer. He knew that it couldn’t be just anyone because his computer was protected with extra security. Bill spent hours trying to track down the thief. One day when Bill was on his computer he was going through a list of who opened the computer and when he say a weird number. He tried to find out what it meant but couldn’t. Meanwhile Mike was not leading a happy life. He was rich and famous. Didn’t even see his wife, she was always out and about. He couldn’t go out and show his face to the public they would just give him credit for the new program and that would make things worse. One week later something very unexpected happened when Mike was at home. The F. B. I came knocking at his door. â€Å"Can I help you? † he asked â€Å"Would you please come with us? † they replied. â€Å"What seems to be the matter? † Mike asked knowing he was caught. â€Å"You are under arrest for hacking into someone’s computer and steeling ideas and programs. † They replied in a disappointed tone of voice. At that moment he knew his life was over his ambition just destroyed his life. He went quietly with them. As stepping out of their car and going towards the police station he says Bill. â€Å"I’m sorry,† he said to him. â€Å"From all the people I didn’t want to think it was you† he replied in a disappointed way. Mike walked off with the agents and into the station. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. All of the money from the program went to Bill Gates and he got all the credit. He managed to by back all his company and start dominating the computer world once again. Mike was finished he would never write another computer program again. Bill’s life returned to normal except for one thing he had no best friend beside him. Bill Gates had been friends since high school. (2017, Aug 21). Management of Human Resources Class Discussion wk3 Assignment

Management of Human Resources Class Discussion wk3 - Assignment Example rsity, it is important to have a diversity training where the management and employees can know how to treat people of diversity and encourage it as well within the organization. Inclusivity can be cultivated through allowing the employees into the decision making process within the organization at whatever level is convenient (Jackson, Shuler & Werner, 2012). This will be a sign of respect of their opinion and will boost their productivity as well as reduce or eliminate cases of workplace unfair treatment towards the company. In a small company, harassment is easy to prevent through clearly stating the rules of the company once an employee is hired. These rules without many employees to monitor will be easily implemented and followed up upon. The other way is to provide a system of instilling discipline as well as punishing employees that is fair. This can be done through having steps to follow such as warning letters before suspension is enacted if the behavior is recurrent (Jackson, Shuler & Werner, 2012). These are bound to keep employees in check over the harassment

Business Ethics Position Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Business Ethics Position Paper - Essay Example The first issue is regarding the working hours of employees in our supply chains. The study indicates that three of our supply chains allow their employees to work for more than 60 hours a week, thus allowing the employees not to utilize their day off. However, I would like to point out here that this is in blatant violation of the Supplier Requirements of the company. The Supplier Requirements point out that the maximum number of hours that can be allowed for an employee in a week is 40 hours (Article 25, Supplier Requirements). Yet another serious issue observed in the assessment was the compulsory overtime enforced by our suppliers. I would like to mention here that this is against the human right policies followed by the company in its entire operation. In addition, it is pointed out in the Supplier Requirements that all kinds of overtime should be strictly voluntary (Article 33, Supplier Requirements). The company has decided to take strict corrective steps in this regard. As yo u rightly know, Motorola is committed to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact in its labor issues. So, the company always upholds the principle that businesses should uphold the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor (Motorola Corporate Responsibility Report 2011). Seeing these violations despite the company’s best efforts to ensure human rights in its entire operations is highly disappointing. ... Most important of all, all the supply chains are required to take corrective measure within 2 months from hereof and duly inform the company. I would like to inform here that failure to meet this deadline would lead to the cancellation of the contract with the respective suppliers. How ever, we are seriously saddened to see that some of our employees are denied the basic human rights as evident from the findings by the Specialized Technology Resources (STR) Cal-Safety Compliance (CSCC) in its 2011 assessment in our major supply chains. The issues found in the STR-CC assessment were as follows. The first issue is regarding the working hours of employees in our supply chains. Slavery Without Submission Essay Example for Free

Slavery Without Submission Essay In chapter 9 of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of The United States, Zinn analyzes, in details about the tough and troublesome living arrangements the slaves had to endure during the early 1800’s, the slave revolts that were started because of these living conditions, and how Abraham Lincoln was elected President, which led to the Civil War because the Southern States thought Lincoln was siding with the northern states about the slavery issue. In this Chapter, Howard Zinn is comparing what happens with the smaller slave rebellions that happened earlier on to what Abraham Lincoln eventually did, except Lincoln having done it on a much, much larger scale. The slave system was such an in depth system that made an abundance of money for the country. Southern states relied heavily on cotton, which was picked by the slaves. Since the southern states did depend on slave labor so much, Abraham Lincoln knew that these would be key reasons as to why abolishing slavery would be incredibly hard. Zinn talks about how the majority of slaves would either run away from their masters or physically revolt against their masters. Eventually, slave masters started to worry about slave revolts since they had started to become more popular in America. Zinn wrote†¦ â€Å"Religion was used for control. A book consulted by many planters was the Cotton Plantation Record and Account Book, which gave these instructions to overseers: You will find that an hour devoted every Sabbath morning to their moral and religious instruction would prove a great aid to you in bringing about a better state of things amongst the Negroes. I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. In my opinion, The Bible’s words have been twisted ever since it has been written and in the article â€Å"How The Bible Was Used To Justify Slavery†, it talks about how slave owners would have essentially used fear in the words of scripture on the slaves to scare them into not revolting against their masters (Blake). The main reason that these revolts never developed into anything serious is because the national government would not allow it. Even the more educated African Americans tried to rebel against the practice of slavery but in more civil terms. David Walker, a free and educated African American wrote a pamphlet called Walker’s Appeal. This pamphlet was not one of the more civil anti-slavery documents of this time. The pamphlet focused on a kill or be killed attitude if slaves wanted to obtain their freedom from their masters. This pamphlet did not go over well with southern slave holders. The state of Georgia offered money for the death of David Walker, who was later found to be dead. This was another form of fear that was used against slaves and another example of the national government, not allowing a revolution to take place. The national government’s stance was that slavery was not going to end, unless they agreed to it. Even Abraham Lincoln was not for the equality of African Americans, at least at first. Lincoln is quoted as saying â€Å"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races – that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people, and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything. † (Lincoln, 145-146). Lincoln was for the progress of the country, first and foremost. Lincoln knew that slavery was a subject that could divide the nation and that slave labor was making the country money, so he could not just outright abolish it or let these revolutions of the slaves succeed. Zinn reiterates this fact when saying†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"He opposed slavery, but could not see blacks as equals, so a constant theme in his approach was to free the slaves and to send them back to Africa† Lincoln was somewhat of a flip-flopper when it came to whom he was talking to about the subject to. It was not until the Civil War started and the casualties were getting higher and higher that Lincoln decided to enact the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation obviously did not go over well with southerners, but Lincoln did it to preserve a win for the Union, but it also did not go over well with anti-slavery forces, because for good reason, they believed that everyone should have the right to be free. This led to the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment, which officially abolished slavery. With all of this happening, resentment towards African Americans continued to grow and this time in the northern states. Poor northerners started looking at the war as liberation of African Americans that they had been dying for, so they started a riot against many African Americans. After all of this had happened, Lincoln was eventually assassinated, and Andrew Johnson became president and somewhat hurt the progress of African Americans. The government tried to give more rights and privileges to African Americans, but had a hard time keeping the situation under control. Black codes were started up, as well as the Ku Klux Klan. The government wanted to keep the white elites happy, but this in turn would usually mean something not appealing for African Americans, which would make it into a vicious circle. Howard Zinn’s point of this whole chapter was that for anything to actually change, something monumental would have to happen, not a revolt, not slaves running away, but a full fledged war. Even with this actually happening, with the Civil War, it was not fully accepted till years later. The slave system was in place such an in depth labor system that made so much money that people could not fathom a world without slaves, even though most knew it was morally wrong.

Effects of Leadership in the US Army Essay --

The readiness of the United States Army is something that many American citizens are guilty of taking advantage of. For nearly two hundred and thirty-nine years the Army has been responsible for all land-based military operations concerning the United States of America and it's interests. Months and years of training go into readying every single soldier for that moment when he or she will be called upon. Now, imagine that readiness being compromised by poor leadership or the poor development of future Army leaders. With the ever changing landscape of how the world fights it's wars, coupled with the probable possibility of downsizing in the US military, existing and new leaders must be sharp and honorable (Tan, 2011). They must be intellectually capable to overcome and adapt to any situation to keep the soldiers safe and effective. Sergeant Jones Sergeant (Sgt) Jones was an incredibly successful non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the Army. Projecting through the ranks quickly, Sgt Jones appeared to have everything it took to have a highly decorated career doing what appeared to be his calling. And although he was highly sought after by higher ranking NCO's and officers, he was often hated and bad-mouthed by those under his command. Now, one might think – â€Å"well it's the military, of course you dislike your superior†, but in the confines of the Army this is almost never true. Good leaders, particularly those at the Sgt level, are regularly loved and admired for the care, compassion and ultimate leadership that they show their soldiers. Peace between Major Religions

Good morning everyone, It has been known that all religions have their differences and this can often lead to some conflict. However, throughout my speech three religion's views on peace will be Investigated and then eventually a solution will be found to living peacefully together. Christians, Buddhists and Muslims all have different ways to achieving peace both internally and externally and it is interesting to see many of the similarities and compare them. However, we have already reached our first differentiation between the religions; their view on what peace is and the source of it.Peace Is a fundamental aspect of all the religions and fleetly Christians would not be able to follow the 10 Commandments if peace was not portrayed through their actions. To love your neighbor as you love yourself requires you to love everyone and through respect and dignity this can be done. The source of peace in Christianity is Jesus himself as he bought peace to the world as he walked It. Jesus Is the peacemaker. Buddhism refers to peace as enlightenment, and the Buddha (a human prince) is the first man to reach enlightenment.Because Buddhism is about this occurrence it is often referred to as the religion of peace. Buddhists believe the source of peace is within everyone and that the Buddha teachings and ways will help everyone find the way to enlightenment. These two faiths could easily live In peace with each other but Muslims believe that to turn a house of war to a house of peace requires Muslims to kill all the non-believers. Personally I believe that this is most pathetic and UN-peaceful or violent way to peace ever. The Muslims seek their peace seeking information from their source of peace, the Quern. As portrayed these already differentiate and bring up multiple problems that could cause conflict. It will soon become very evident that these religions all contradict themselves. All of the religions have their Internal peace organizations and all of these organizati ons explore interrelations with other people outside of their religions. Some of the Christian organizations are SPEAK, Network of Christian Peace, Christian Peacemaker Teams UK and all the Christian churches.Islamic peace organizations include Muslims for Peace, MUNCH and Islamic Peace. I however find a problem with this, which will be explained soon. The Buddhist peace groups include Soak Kaki and Buddhist Peace Group, these 2 organizations are trying to achieve peace not only internally but pass it on to other and share their peaceful thoughts. However if in Islamic countries they seek peace why do they around punishing people and killing them, this appears to be a very urn-peaceful method. For example when I was In Dublin an Islamic country one I got kicked out of the shops because my clothes were too revealing, the police said to me, â€Å"get out of here or I will cut off your hand. † I feel hat the Muslim peace organizations really need to spread quickly because I thoug ht that the police was Just Joking, but no I saw 2 women without their hands. It Is UN- peaceful and doesn't show eternal love and care. Maybe these associations are seeking peace and respecting other people and their beliefs, but their religions as a I OFF All of the religions have their specific ways that they achieve peace or become peaceful within.Firstly Christian's have many ways to achieve peace but these have been paraphrased into a 6 step process: 1) Read the New Testament and the gospels re the best place to start 2) Pray to God, God will help you reach emotional and physical peace 3) Control yourself from doing things you will regret, make sure to think a bout your actions first. 4) Control your anger – sometimes some meditation or quiet time can help with releasing anger, pains and irritations 5) Do not respond to insults 6) Try to make the people who surround you peaceful as well.I believe this is quite an effective and reasonable way to achieve peace within and around you. The Buddhist methods of achieving peace are relatively the same like controlling your anger. However the Buddhist community thrives on meditation and the Buddha taught that through meditation and chant peace will be found internally. Islamic steps to peace were hard to understand at first however after thinking about the method I believe it could be quite effective. They believe that if you come to peace with yourself the world around you will be at peace with you. Therefore they also do some sort of meditation and imagine peaceful non-chaotic places where they are free. Also another interesting suggestion was to pick up a paintbrush and some paint and paint peace. This could be stimulating and personal and therefore be very successful for individuals. In the history of all the religions there appears to be evidence of stories or parables that suggest peaceful actions within the religion. In Christianity I believe that the most peaceful parable is the story of The Good Sa maritan. In this parable an ordinary Christian man is shown to help when others like the priest and a wealthy workingman don't. It shows genuine care for everyone and a form of peaceful treaty between Christianity and humanity. The parable of the Good Muslim is a parable that caches us that Allah is in ways the bringer of peace, â€Å"In the name of Allah [1], the All- Merciful, the Ever-Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. All Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon the Prophet saws [2]. The last contrasting religion is the Buddhists who have quite a fascinating parable, which relates to achieving peace, it is called, â€Å"The Proud Dung Beetle and the Lump of Dung. † It proves that everyone should be treated equally. It is shown throughout Buddhism that the Buddha, I. E. The prince didn't expect to be treated differently he wanted to be treated the same way as others. This bought to their community respect and no social class that seems to be a problem in modern day society. All in all I believe a mutual friendship and respect towards everyone especially people of a different religion. Respect is the key component in establishing peace between all people. If everyone of opposing religions can respect others beliefs and worldviews I believe that a peaceful solution can be formed within the community. I speak to the Muslims now in saying that you don't have to be apart of the violence in your religion, please feel free to make your own decisions and maybe Join a peace

Downsizing Definition Essay

Downsizing occurs when a company permanently reduces its workforce. Corporate downsizing is often the result of poor economic conditions or the company’s need to cut jobs in order to lower costs or maintain profitability. Downsizing may occur when one company merges with another, a product or service is cut, or the economy falters. Downsizing also occurs when employers want to â€Å"streamline† a company – this refers to corporate restructuring in order to increase profit and maximize efficiency. Downsizing results in layoffs that are often followed by other restructuring changes, such as branch closings, departmental consolidation, and other forms of cutting pay expenses. In some cases, employers are not fired, but instead become part-time or temporary workers to trim costs. In a business enterprise, downsizing is reducing the number of employees on the operating payroll. Some users distinguish downsizing from a layoff, with downsizing intended to be a permanent downscaling and a layoff intended to be a temporary downscaling in which employees may later be rehired. Businesses use several techniques in downsizing, including providing incentives to take early retirement and transfer to subsidiary companies, but the most common technique is to simply terminate the employment of a certain number of people. Recentll, country’s largest cell phone company Grameenphone, has embarked on major operational cost-cutting measures that include the downsizing of its manpower in some specific sections of the company. GrameenPhone is the largest mobile phone company in Bangladesh. In the midst of lack of communication means, GrameenPhone has introduced an effective and user-friendly mobile phone network. It has put a positive impact on the lifestyle of the people of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest cellular operator in the country. It is a joint venture enterprise between Telenor and Grameen Telecom Corporation. Telenor is the largest telecommunications company in Norway, owns 51% shares of Grameenphone. It is amongst the oldest, most sophisticated, and diversified telecom companies in the world. Grameen Telecom itself owns 35% shares, 9.5% shares are held by Marubeni Corporation in japan and the remaining 4.5% shares are held by Gonofone Development Corp in New York. In addition, three leading international financial institutions– the International Finance Corporation, Asian Development Bank and the Commonwealth Development Corporation — are also shareholders of GrameenPhone. The three organizations each hold three per cent of preferred shares of GrameenPhone. It was the first company to introduce GSM technology in Bangladesh. It also established the first 24-hour Call Center to support its subscribers. With the slogan Stay Close, stated goal of Grameenphone is to provide affordable telephony to the entire population of Bangladesh. At present around 4800 employees, both permanent and contractual, are working in different sections of the GP. But the sudden decision to downsize its manpower has created panic among most employees of the company that saw substantial rise in its annual profit-earning in recent years. The victims of the latest cost cutting measures are in most cases permanent employees who worked in the sales and services departments. The company has abolished its logistics services in all regional offices and in the case of sales it has reduced the number of posts and declared the remaining post vacant. Interestingly, it has asked all the sales staff either to compete a fresh for the vacant posts or take an attractive ‘exit’ package. Management is saying it is a part of the business alignment process, Through a so called performance evaluation process the company is conducting termination of permanent employee who were meant to be loyal and efficient. Even in many cases employees are being forcefully asked to leave the organization. some of the employees have complained that Grameenphone’s management has threatened them to submit their resignation letter otherwise they will be mentally humiliated as well as downsized at work. From employee source it is found that in many cases the company is violating the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006 but the government or the labor law enforcement bureau is not t aking any action. The statistic shows that last year the company profit incensement was almost 205% and the employee of the company was suppose to get a potation of the profit as per the company policy. But it never happened. As Grameenphone’s profit already is in increase as per last year’s report than the company should provide a valid reason of termination of such a large number of employment within a short time. Recently the management have introduces a new system of re-interview within the company to ensure the existing position of the individuals. Management has claimed this process as a part of performance evaluation tool which has made the employee to raise their voice against this injustice. By using such words like ‘Business Alignment’ and ‘Change in structure’ actually the company is terminating the employment of permanent employee who has given his 8 hours of every single day with loyalty to built this organization to this height. Even in some cases the company had forced some of the female employee to attend the interviews during their maternity leave and terminated their employment contract as claiming the employee is less productive for the company which is a direct violation of Bangladesh labor Act 2006. Employees have claimed that the management is not providing any written announcement or instruction but verbally they are asking to leave the organization through phone calls and general meeting. This year the government has announced 11% inflation rate but Grameenphone being a multination company has provided only 0%-5% incensement to it’s employees though it’s quarterly report shows almost 81% increase op profit with is this year. Back in 2009 Almost 1500 permanent employees are asked to leave the organization without any valid reasons but based on performance evaluation process. So how come the number of termination became so high based on performance evaluation process after a certain period of time every year? And how downsizing a large number of senior employees into junior position became ethical practice or business alignment process? As a Norwegian company people had a better expectation from Grameenphone but now it seems to be the reason behind of distraction of hundreds of employee’s career.

Biology Lab Report Essays

Biology Lab Report Essays Biology Lab Report Paper Biology Lab Report Paper Fungal and bacterial amylase are the enzymes that we going to study for their ability to break down starch. In order to determine how temperature affects the activity of amylase enzyme and the optimal temperature for fungal and bacterial amylase, the activity of these enzymes were tested at different temperature and times and iodine was used as indicator of presence of starch. During the experiment we observed that bacterial amylase had faster enzymatic activity than fungal amylase; bacterial amylase achieved 100% hydrolysis at ICC and ICC at 2 minutes time and fungal amylase achieved partial hydrolysis at ICC at 4 minutes time. With all of this we can say that the optimal temperature for fungal and bacterial are almost the same, but bacterial have faster amylase activity than fungal and that is possible because bacterial amylase is found in human saliva, were digesting process begins. Introduction Life is regulated by chemical reactions, but these reactions would take too long to occur without presence of specific proteins that catalyst all biological processes in living organisms transforming one molecule into another, this catalysts are called enzymes (Copeland, Robert 2000). Enzymes are very specific routines because they contain one active site on their surface that enables the substrate to bind to the enzyme and form the enzyme substrate complex and then release the products. (Figure 1). Because enzymes are so specific, one enzyme catalysts just one reaction, that is why thousands of different enzymes exist in a cell cataloging thousands of different chemical reactions. All enzymes work together in catabolic (breakdown or digestion of large, complex molecules) and anabolic process (synthesis of large molecules) (Copeland, Robert 2000). The chemical breakdowns of nutrients by digestive enzymes are what make possible the mechanical breakdown of food (Fried Handsomeness,2001). That is one of the things that make enzymes very important in our life and demonstrate that the main function of enzymes is to increase the rate of the reaction without altering its equilibrium (Fried Handsomeness,2003). All enzymes have different conditions at which they work bets, these numbers of conditions are called optimal conditions and these often are the same as the organism habitat conditions. But enzymatic activity is not as easy as it looks because different factors can affect the rate of he reaction, examples are the PH, substrate concentration, salt concentration, inhibitor, activators and temperature (Alberta , Pitter Caller, 2012). But how can temperature affect the rate of enzymatic activity? If temperature increase, the rate of chemical reaction increase, but if this temperature increase drastically beyond specific temperature (optimal) the rate of the reaction is reduce because enzymes are protein and at temperatures too high they denature (lose shape), and in this way the substrate is unavailable to bind with the active site; on the other hand when temperatures are too low less intact is achieved between enzyme and substrate because the movement of molecules decrease (Alberta , Pitter Caller, 2012). Although enzymes make reactions faster, in order to breakdown big molecules into smaller it is necessary that hydrolysis occur. Hydrolysis is a process in which a chemical bond is broken in the water (split into hydrogen and hydroxide ions) , and the other molecule(split into two simple sections)( Fried Handsomeness,2003). Fungal Espadrilles rosary and bacterial Bacillus electrophoresis amylase are the two types of enzymes that will be used during this lab to test the ability f amylase to break down starch ,a polysaccharide present in our daily diet, into simpler sugars , maltose (Smith,et al,201 2). Bacterial amylase is found in different habits for example in human saliva, for this reason is easy to infer that bacterial amylase would break down the starch better and faster than the fungal amylase. According to this information amylase activity going to change higher or lower according to the temperature but it will be faster in bacterial than in fungal, 100% hydrolysis going to occur between ICC to ICC because this is the habitat temperature for these species and this means that is the optimal enrapture, but in bacterial occur in less time than in fungal because are found in human saliva were chemical digestion begins. Methods The principal objective of this study was to determine how temperature affects the activity of amylase enzyme and the optimal temperature for fungal and bacterial amylase. In order to make this experiment possible we needed fungal Espadrilles rosary amylase and bacterial Bacillus electrophoresis amylase; 5 ml of 1. 5% starch were placed in one test tube for each temperature and ml of amylase in the rest of the tubes for each temperature (amylase bacterial first). The test tubs were placed in their respective temperature of CO, ICC, 600, and ICC. All tubes were allowed to equilibrate for 5 minutes at their respective temperatures and then 3 drops of iodine were added to each well on the spot plate at the 0 minutes row; then 3 drops of solution from the tubes that contained starch were added to the first row of the spot plate at the O minutes mark; after that the contents of the tube that contained starch were mixed with the one that contain amylase and the time was set for 2 minutes; at this time 3 drops of iodine were added to the second row on the spot plate and 3 drops of amylase mixed with starch were added to the same row of the spot plate (the data was recorded), those steps were repeated until 10 minutes. According to the color change it could be determined whether 100% hydrolysis occurred or not (figure 2). Then the same procedure was repeated using the fungal amylase and the data was also collected. Result During the experiment we observed that bacterial amylase had faster enzymatic activity than fungal amylase; bacterial amylase achieved 100% hydrolysis at ICC and ICC at 2 minutes time and fungal amylase get partial hydrolysis at ICC at 4 minutes time (table 1 and 2). ISO according to graph 1 and 2 we can observed how hydrolysis of starch can change over time at different temperatures for fungal and bacterial amylase and in this way we corroborated the data. Also in order to determine how accuracy our data was we calculated the variance and standard deviance using the following formula: aver)AN-1 and SD=(x-x aver)AN-1 Discussion Observing the data collecting, we can support the idea that bacterial has faster reaction time than fungal amylase. Bacterial reached complete hydrolysis of starch faster than fungal and we can support this because urine the experiment it was easy to observe how temperature affected the enzymatic activity. For high temperature amylase activity did not exist (dark black), this means that starch was present because the temperature was too high and denatured the enzyme. In this case the active site lost its shape and was unavailable to bind with the substrate. In the other site low temperature restricted the movement of molecules and in this condition hydrolysis occurred but too slowly; that was why the presence of starch remaining at this temperature appeared after more time . This information was noted because the use of iodine made it possible to determine the presence of starch because iodine with starch make a dark color . We know this because the first row of the spot plate was only contained starch and iodine (control). When hydrolysis occurs starch becomes glucose and the only color observed is the yellow of iodine. The faster of the dark color disappears the faster the enzyme amylase activity occurs; that is how the experiments showed that bacterial has faster reaction time than fungal although they have the same optimal temperature. In real experiments, limitations can occur and it is very important to consider that fact in order to analyze our data better. Contamination of the spot plate can produce a different color and can result in error for example, if starch particles are already on the spot plate then this can change the data. Also it is very important that the different temperatures have the correct Co we are working on it because a change in a temperature can affect the data of the experiment either slowing the process with low temperature when is supposed to get hydrolysis or the reverse. During this experiment we collected a lot of data and this made possible to understand why enzymes have an important use in our life but also in industries. The main function of amylase is break down starch to glucose and knowing how fast it occur explain why amylase is very important in the production of syrups and glucose.

Assignment 1 part 3 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

1 part 3 - Assignment Example Anna loved her sister Kate so much that though she also suffered from pains due to medical procedures, she never opposed her parents’ decision in favour of Kate’s health. However, during court trial it was also the same sisterly love which made her pursue the lawsuit against her parents for medical emancipation. During her testimony in court when Campbell asked her as to who convinced her to file a lawsuit, she replied, â€Å"Kate.† (p.449). She recalled the time when she saw Kate holding pills, purposely to end her life (p.460). Then, at one time, Kate convinced her not to donate her kidney by making her imagine a life where she could join hockey, go to any college she wants without having to worry about her sick sister (p. 462). Following her sister Kate’s advice of not donating her kidney, she thought of filing a case against her parents for medical emancipation. Secondly, parents’ love for their children is a value very much evident in the novel. Sara loved Kate so much that she was willing to do every thing for her daughter’s sake even to the extent of representing herself and her husband in court against her own youngest daughter’s claim for medical emancipation. Brian had been a very loving and supportive father to Anna by making her stay with him in the fire station for a couple of days as court hearing commenced. Before the hearing, Brian sympathized with her daughter Anna and vowed to take side with her, allowing her not to donate her kidney. Yet, during the trial, he burst into tears, expressing his wish for Anna to donate her kidney to save Kate’s life. That’s how strong his love was for Kate. In another incident, we also see Brian as a very loving father to Jesse when he discovered that Jesse committed arson in an elementary school near their house as all the clues were pointing to him. Yet, Brian kept it as a secret out of love for his son. This incident touched Jesse
